What’s the ONE Thing You Want Your Company to be Known For?

When building a company, staying focused and not getting distracted is one of the hardest parts of the entrepreneurial journey. You have an endless to-do list. People are pulling on you at all times. Everyone and everything needs your time.

You could take your company in a lot of different directions – pursue different customers, different channels, new products, and more.

It’s easy to chase shiny objects. It’s easy to view all shiny objects as incredible opportunities. They aren’t. They’re often traps; traps that steal your time and resources and lead you to mediocre execution in other areas.

Distraction is the enemy. Focus is the golden land.

Think of it this way: most companies are only known for one thing. What’s the one thing you want to be known for?

You don’t have the time or resources to try to be known for many things. It’s hard to be known for many things until you’re known for one thing. Early in the life of your company, consumers will think of you with regard to only one thing. What do you want that one thing to be?

As investors, we’d rather see a company be really exceptional at one thing than mediocre at many things. Your most valuable resource right now is time. Don’t give it away to initiatives that don’t cement what you want to be known for.
